Have you ever wondered how you would survive if you were left marooned somewhere like Castaway?

Well we often think about it when we kayak along the Helford. It’s the perfect spot to be left to survive in nature.

You just have to get good at fishing as we found out one evening wild camping on Frenchman’s Creek. I took a fishing line but not sure if was the lack of patience or the clever mullets with soft mouths avoiding my fishing hook, but it got me thinking how you could survive like the iron age settlers on Calamanssack on the beautiful stretch of water.

So how would you survive?

There’s abundance of fish from mackerel and grey mullet, with wild garlic growing in the woodland to spice it up a bit.

Or there’s the mussels, oysters and scallops too. For greens, it’s important to keep up with your iron, there’s the kelp and various

types of seaweed and for those with a sweet tooth amongst you there’s the white sweet powder that forms on sugar kelp when it dries.

Then when you wash there’s the beautiful orange breadcrumb sponge,, perfect for washing with and plenty of firewood as the whole river is surrounded by ancient oak trees and coniferous firs that can also provide a lovely canopy to reside under, epecially in the summer months when the trees bloom with green leaves.

Music well there’s the beautiful birdsong of curlews, squarking herons, the sweet song of the blackbirds, green finches, sandpipers to name a few.. just don’t forget to collect some rainwater as the river and creeks are filled with sea water that floods in twice a day on the incoming tide.

So if you like fish and greens this is perhaps one of the best health food escapes around! Or you could just come and enjoy a 2 hour stunning guided Koru Kayak Adventure and head back to the Budock Vean some super tasty food and water and drinks on tap!
